World Radio Day inspired our Squirrels who were lucky enough to visit BBC Radio York over three nights. Our future radio enthusiasts were not only able to learn about local radio, but were also able to think about local heroes as part of their Local Superhero badge.
The Squirrels visited the key areas of the radio station from the newsroom to the production
suite and their favourite rooms – the studios. They sat in the presenter’s seat, put on their
headphones and saw how the studio works, including how presenters can talk to each other
without the listeners hearing.
We made our own microphones and were interviewed by the BBC’s Sarah Urwin who asked each Squirrel about their local superhero and some of the interviews will hopefully feature in future radio programmes.

We are grateful to Sarah Urwin for hosting these visits, both as a BBC producer, but also a Volunteer with Dringhouses Scouts, one of our own superheroes!

We thought about the important service that local radio provides, both in normal times and for helping keeping us informed when events are difficult like during bad weather events.
You too could be a superhero to one of our 300 Scouts, interested in inspiring a younger generation why not ask about volunteering with us?
