Thanks to everyone that supported the replacement of the roof to our HQ building. With 316 children and young people currently in the group, we are bigger than ever before and still growing. The new roof means we’re looking forward to a leak free Autumn and hopefully another 50 years of success!
The Roof- Then and Now!
First erected in 1976, the roof of our headquarters building has served us well for fifty years. But, in the past few years, several leaks have allowed the rain into the building and impacted the services we deliver to our members. A small attempt to patch the leaks just pushed the water to the next hole and so it continued.
In May, the decision was made to replace the roof and, as it is on church land, the relevant permissions were sought. Once approved, quotes were requested and with the work awarded to a roofer in July, fundraising commenced.
Fundraising- Thanks for the Support!
Replacing a roof is a costly affair for a Scout Group (or any small charity). Fundraising started in earnest once we had a target amount to raise from Yorkshire Roof Repairs Ltd . We hit the fundraising goal pretty quickly. As a result, we owe massive thanks to the all the parents, former members and supporters who donated to our fundraising campaign; the congregation of St Edward the Confessor Church, many of whom were very generous; and funds were also obtained from a charitable foundation, which prefers to remain anonymous. This enabled work to replace the roof to start in August.
Many thanks also to the neighbours to the rear of our building: Thanks for putting up with the scaffolding intruding into your gardens and with the obstructed view. And for making tea for the team working to replace the roof!
Raising the Roof
As can be seen, the reason for the leaks very quickly became apparent. Numerous broken tiles, rotted lats and holes in the felt.
We think you’ll agree that the new roof looks a lot better now, Yorkshire Roof Repairs are doing a great job. Work will be finished before the new term starts in September.
The Improvement Work Continues
The roof replacement is not the only project we are working on. Our success and growing group size is putting pressure on the existing storage space. As membership numbers increase, so does the equipment we need. As a result, we need to increase how much storage space we have: we need to build more storage units in the building. And the central heating is in desperate need of renewal too. The heaters are too big, too inefficient, and are becoming high maintenance and costly. Our fundraising efforts continue.
