Fun at the Annual Hergarth Challenge

After the success of our team in the Hergarth Challenge last year, this Sunday (22nd March) we hosted the annual event. It’s the 110th Anniversary of Cub Scouting in the UK and the teams had to design a poster to illustrate this milestone.

The Hergarth Challenge is an annual event which has been running since 1965. The trophy was originally donated by Herbert Garthwaite to be awarded to Cubs Scouts. At the time there were a lot of trophies for sports such as swimming, cross country, football, etc. so it was felt that this would be a good opportunity to celebrate a non-sporting event, and so the Hergarth Challenge was born.

Teams of three Cubs from every pack in the City of York District are invited to attend; ideally, they comprise a ten, nine and eight year old. The catch is that no one knows what the activity will be until they arrive! They then have about an hour and a half to work together as a team to do their best to complete the challenge.

All three of our Cub packs were represented at the event and while they did not win this time, they did have fun, got to make new friends from their group and from other groups and learned about working as a team at the same time.

All the teams did brilliantly well, hopefully not permanently staining their hands with the dye from the tissue paper! The brief was not only to create a poster celebrating the anniversary, but also to work together as a team including all members of the team and to fill as much of the page as possible with colour.

The Vicar from St. Edward the Confessor Church, Richard Carew, had the difficult task of judging all the entries, looking for the most colourful poster that clearly identified the 100th anniversary celebration. After a short deliberation, the team from Dunnington Cubs was selected as the winner! Congratulations to Dunnington and we look forward to being with you next year when you host the event.

This is a fun evert which we join in with every year, it brings together children and adults from all over the city and is a great opportunity to meet others share experiences and learn together. As usual the event was planned and run by our amazing team of volunteers, this time in the Cubs section. We’re always looking for new volunteers to join our great team supporting the children and young people of our community. Check out our vacancies page and contact us if you’re interested in helping out. If you have a child or young person that would be interested in joining us, please go to our joining page where you can complete a joining form.
