Hergarth Challenge 60 Year Anniversary Badge

The Hergarth Challenge is an annual event which has been running since 1965. The trophy was originally donated by Herbert Garthwaite to be awarded to Cubs Scouts. At the time there were a lot of trophies for sports such as swimming, cross country, football, etc. so it was felt that this would be a good opportunity to celebrate a non-sporting event, and so the Hergarth Challenge was born. This year’s event was celebrated with the issue of a badge to celebrate the 60 year anniversary, as as everyone knows, all Scouts love badges!

Each year, teams of three Cubs (an 8, 9 and 10 year old) from all of the Cub packs in both of the York Districts (Ebor and Minster) are invited to take part in a non-sporting challenge, the nature of which is not revealed until the event starts. The event is organised by the leaders of the winning pack from the year before and this year that privilege fell to West Thorpe Scouts, who set up a great challenge based upon a theme of generations past and present.

Our teams had a great time and really enjoyed themselves, finishing 1st, 2nd and 11th. Thanks so much to the organisers for making it possible and all the hard work preparing the activities. We’ll see everyone again next year as we will be hosting the 2026 Hergarth Challenge.

Obviously activities like these cannot happen without the support of out volunteer leaders and helpers. If you would like to join in the fun with our successful team please get in touch.
